Brooklyn by way of Boston, Bishop Allen is a quartet named after the street in Cambridge MA where the two founding members, Justin Rice and Christian Rudder, started writing songs. And like any hip young band on the East Coast, they relocated to Brooklyn. “Dimmer” is the opening track on 2009’s album Grrr…, and is everything indie rock represents: sweat lyrics, soft acoustics, and hipster accessible.

Bassbin Twins (one guy named: Pete) is one artist that’s hard to catch live. His fall “tour” had exactly 3 dates; the final date was at the premiere monthly breaks party in San Francisco – TRBL. The club was sufficiently packed considering it was a typical Friday night in SF with PantyRaid, Vibesquad, and the Plump DJs all playing at the same time. Bassbin Twins reclusiv-ivity works to his advantage, guaranteeing the crowd was almost exclusively Twin fans. Playing in the back of Anu, a horribly dark DJ bar on 6th street, Bassbin Twins did what he does best, lacing the crowd with beats that went from dubsteppy breaks, hip-hop remixes, and straight up breakbeat bliss. At the end of his set the crowd was sweaty, the bass bins got a workout, and TRBL resident, and birthday boy, Ground_Control’s arm was soar from cheering the reclusive breaks master. Here’s a little taste of what you missed with:

Canadian born and current Berlin resident Circlesquare has been making dreamy records held up with solid electronic textures and falsetto vocals way before Beck made that shit cool. “Non-Revival Alarm” is off Pre-Earthquake Anthem, an album that took 2-years to record, and is a great intro to the man’s sound.

They’re back! The Gangsters, who originally formed in ’91, broke up a few years later, only to be convinced by the likes of Beatville Records to reunite in ’97. Straight out of Dublin, the Gangsters were Influenced by the era of 2-tone ska by bands like: The Specials, Bad Manners, Madness, and The English Beat, they were the only ska band in Dublin for years. “Family” is a classic 2-tone ska track.
